Sidenote: I’m excited for my Urban and Civic Education class. Today we got to meet with different teachers from the various school districts to learn about different ways to bring service-learning into their classrooms. It was a nice workshop-type experience where we could give each other ideas and just go over the basics of what constitutes service-learning. So during all that I got to connect with a teacher who is developing a service-learning project at a high school about 40minutes away from where I live so he’ll be contacting me with more details. We’re thinking about doing service-learning in regards to diabetes awareness/prevention (fundraising), physical fitness, health and nutrition education in conjunction with providing impoverished families with food that the students will gather. Overall, it’s just a bunch of exciting and engaging things to get the students involved in their community and school while at the same time learning the curriculum that is required.
