Rebels in Syria are still holding strong. But how long will they last if no one steps in? I was prompted to write another article about Syria after reading an amazing article in Marie Claire magazine about women in Syria who are doing big things. I recommend that anyone who can get a copy, should. But back to the issue at hand.
Homs. The one word has appeared countless times in the media this week. Government forces in Syria killed hundreds over the course of this week in Homs. Citizens being slaughtered, again. The death never stops. Tens, even hundreds, may lose their lives in a day. Basic human rights are being ignored in the name of putting down a resistance.
Bashar al-Assad (above) is the man behind the bloody crackdown. He is the President of Syria. That title would imply that he is protecting the best interest of his citizens. Not so with al-Assad. Emails have already surfaced that-if you believe the authenticity- confirm that Bashar al-Assad merely seeks to deny as much of the violence as possible. (read more about said emails here)
So at what point should other nations step in to help? The answer depends on who you are and what you believe in. However, I think that most people believe that something should be done. The U.N.’s progress has been blockaded by Russia, and even China. The reasons are very complex in nature. There must be something to gain, though, if a nation is willing to step in on behalf of such a violent government.
I wish that I was already a journalist, that way I could cover more of the important stuff, like this. Alas. I really do feel that these revolutions in the middle east are important. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity in my humble opinion. There is so much to learn, so much to do. The world is watching, waiting. Pictures surface everyday. Brave people, young and old, put their lives at risk to fight for something bigger than themselves. I think that it is completely inspiring. I would suggest that everyone learn more about this. In the blink of an eye it could all be over. Don’t just watch whenever the news coverage of Syria is on CNN. Do more. Try to find a blog that comes from someone right in the middle of it all. Make a point of reading New York Times coverage articles. These efforts are not meant to be forgotten.
A good place to start might be here. Bear in mind though, that that particular blog covers all kinds of wars and revolutions, and not just Syria. That is all.
Ashley tells me that people care too much about Whitney Houston’s death when there are hundreds of people dying in Syria. Of course he’s right in thinking that people should care about the innocent deaths of others even if they aren’t famous so this is why I decided to help out with raising awareness on what is happening in Syria by reblogging this. Hopefully with more awareness will come more action to solve the problem.
