Dixie Chicks - Cowboy Take Me Away “Live”
This song always reminds me of myself when I was younger. The amount of times I would replay “Cowboy Take Me Away” and how we sang it for my middle school choir. The mini obsession I had with my Dixie Chicks albums from elementary school all the way up to high school…or just remembering the way singing or listening to the songs made me feel.
Whenever I happen to hear a Dixie Chicks song I automatically go into reminiscing. I remember the very day I heard the song that made me want to get their album. I was 11, almost 12, and I remember laying on top of my parent’s bed, in a dim room by myself, watching GAC (the Great American Country channel) when all of a sudden “Landslide” came out. I can recall being so drawn to the video, to their sound, to the lyrics…everything about it, I just wanted to repeat it and repeat it and repeat it.
Then one year for my birthday—or maybe Christmas, I’m not sure but regardless it was December— that was my wish, to get the album that had “Landslide” on it. And to my great pleasure that year my dad bought me the Home album as well as Wide Open Spaces. So not only did he get me the album with the song I had been obsessing about but he also got me another one which would introduce me to a new set of Dixie Chicks songs that I would learn to love. I listened to the albums so often and repeated the songs so much that after a time even my brother knew all the songs. For some reason that makes me smile because even now when he happens to hear a Dixie Chicks song (even though country is definitely not his thing) he’ll still end up singing some of the lyrics because I made him listen to them so often that they’re automatic to him as well.
To this day these are some of the songs that when I listen to them I feel this great sense of happiness, sadness, nostalgia…I feel a fullness when I hear them. They’re some of my favorites: “Travelin’ Soldier”, “Wide Open Spaces” “You Were Mine”, “Once You’ve Loved Somebody”, “Long Time Gone”, “Landslide”, “Godspeed”, “Top of the World.”
…oh man, I got sidetracked. I wasn’t planning on writing all of that, I was just planning to share the music video, but I guess this song is one of those that makes me want to share the experience of it. This is what I get for waking up early with “Cowboy Take Me Away” on my mind…so now here I am almost 30min later and it’s almost time for me to leave for class. So much for using that time to make breakfast or to fix my face so I look somewhat decent, oh well…it was time well spent listening to good music :) —at least in my mind. Now it’s time for me to use these few minutes I have left to get dressed and eat a snack so I can get to class on time.
I said I wanna touch the earth
I wanna break it in my hands
I wanna grow something wild and unruly
I wanna sleep on the hard ground
In the comfort of your arms
On a pillow of blue bonnets
And a blanket made of stars
Oh it sounds good to me
I said cowboy take me away
Fly this girl as high as you can
Into the wild blue
Set me free oh I pray
Closer to Heaven above
And closer to you
Closer to you
I wanna walk and not run
I wanna skip and not fall
I wanna look at the horizon
And not see a building standing tall
I wanna be the only one
For miles and miles
Except for maybe you
And your simple smile
Oh it sounds good to me
Yes it sounds so good to me
Cowboy take me away
Fly this girl as high as you can
Into the wild blue
Set me free oh I pray
Closer to Heaven above
And closer to you
Closer to you
I said I wanna touch the earth
I wanna break it in my hands
I wanna grow something wild and unruly
Oh it sounds so good to me
Cowboy take me away
Fly this girl as high as you can
Into the wild blue
Set me free oh I pray
Closer to Heaven above
And closer to you
Closer to you
Closer to you
Cowboy take me away
Closer to you
